New Beachwalk is coming to Miami Beach

New 7-mile beachfront walkway spanning the entire length of the city of Miami Beach, from North Beach to South Beach is coming for the first time ever.

Construction is now underway on a beachwalk that will fill in missing gaps of the oceanfront walkway, which is currently only open in pieces and includes both a wooden boardwalk and at-grade beachwalk with pavers.

When complete this winter, pedestrians and bicyclists should be able to walk from South Pointe Park all the way up to North Beach’s North Shore Open Space Park.

Within months, a portion of the new beachwalk will open. An 11-block section from 53rd street to 64th street will open in late October 2018 (connecting to an existing beachwalk in North Beach), while a section from 46th street to 53rd street will open in February 2019 (connecting to the existing boardwalk and beachwalk in Mid-Beach).

The decaying wooden boardwalk in Mid-Beach (where biking is now banned) is planned to be torn down and replaced with an at-grade beachwalk, but construction is not yet underway. Demolition is expected in spring 2019, but the pavilions along the boardwalk will be dismantled this month.

Another gap between 3rd street and 5th street is to be filled, with construction now underway and completion in December 2018.

The final piece, running from 79th street to 87th Street behind the North Shore Open Space Park, will begin construction at a later time.
